March 2022 – Kendall Brill & Kelly LLP Counsel Bert H. Deixler is leading the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission’s investigation into the deputy gangs that have allegedly plagued the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for decades.

He is serving pro bono along with a large team of pro bono lawyers, including KBK Partner Nary Kim, who has extensive experience in white collar and government investigations. They are investigating the claimed existence and impact of deputy gangs and will evaluate what is needed to eradicate them if found.

Mr. Deixler has served as a member or as counsel to numerous reform commissions including the Los Angeles Ethics Commission (Cowan Commission), the Independent Commission on the Los Angeles Police Department (Christopher Commission), the Rampart Independent Review Panel, and the Citizen’s Commission on Jail Violence. He has also testified before the California Senate on constitutional issues related to racial segregation in prisons.

Other lawyers who are participating in the investigation include: Bart Williams and Susan L. Gutierrez of Proskauer; Anthony Pacheco of Vedder Price and former member of the LA Police Commission; Carolyn Kubota of Covington and Naeun Rim of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips. The Commission will coordinate with and receive assistance from the L.A. County Inspector General Max Huntsman.
