July 2020 – Variety’s 2020 Legal Impact Report, which describes itself as recognizing “legal eagles” who “litigated thorny disputes,” honored Kendall Brill & Kelly LLP Partners Philip M. Kelly and Richard B. Kendall as Leading Lawyers for the third year in a row. Variety also previously recognized Mr. Kelly as a Rising Star.
Among the many reasons for honoring the two litigators, Variety cited Mr. Kendall’s successful defense of the estate of the late Hollywood business manager Bob Philpott in the trial and appellate courts.
It also cited his successful and potentially precedent-setting representation of Creative Artists Agency (CAA), one of the globe’s leading talent agencies, in its dispute with the Writers Guilds of America (WGA) concerning the practice and negotiation of “packaging fees” on television and film projects.
Variety cited Mr. Kelly’s representation of several of the entertainment industry’s largest companies, including CBS, Viacom, and NBCUniversal. It also cited Mr. Kelly’s and Mr. Kendall’s successful representation of Regency Entertainment Inc. and Monarch Enterprises in an $18 million breach of contract lawsuit they filed over Warren Beatty’s Rules Don’t Apply box-office flop.
